Rowaida Abdelaziz is the World Social Media Editor at the Huffington Post, based in New York City. She has worked for the Committee to Protect Journalist and AI Jazeera. A graduate of Rutgers University with a BA in Journalism and Media Studies and Middle Eastern studies. She covers how the media portrays middle eastern countries in a bad way. She tweets things like “Until we cover Muslims in a way that reflects how diverse & rich the community actually is, hate crimes won’t stop”. In this tweet she fights for middle eastern cultures to better portray their rich culture. She is a journalist that researches events impacting people who follow the Muslim religion and she writes to give them a voice. She is a woman who is heavily persecuted for being Muslim, she is writes to defend her people. Her approach to writing is how she researches the current events facing her people and she lives the current events facing her people. She is in a special position as a journalist to report the best and most truthful story. Her tweets bring to light the racism that is expressed by countries around the world. Her religion is automatically slapped with a label because they are grouped together with the extremist that follow the same religion and commit atrocities. She reports from being at the front lines of the prejudice that is expressed by many people around the world. For my research, I intend to use sources that follow real world media portrayal. Aside from the portrayal of religion in movies and television, I will be examining how closely those portrayals represent the real aspects of the religions I will be researching. More specifically how those portrayals effect how people choose their religion and how they judge the others choices in their religions.
